About us

Lyrata is a Netherlands-based viola da gamba consort, rooted in the Dutch tradition of viola da gamba playing. Established formally in 2021, the ensemble’s origins trace back to its members’ years of collaboration as students under the tutelage of Mieneke van der Velden at the Royal Conservatoire of the Hague. Guided by Mieneke’s mentorship, Lyrata delved into an extensive repertoire, particularly emphasizing early German and English music. Lyrata’s debut performance featured a diverse selection of English consort pieces, which notably included the complete consort fantasias of Henry Purcell.
Beyond performance, Lyrata’s mission is also to represent and safeguard the Dutch legacy of viola da gamba playing. This tradition finds its roots in the famed viola da gamba player and pedagogue Wieland Kuijken, whose influence reverberates through generations, having taught esteemed viola da gamba players around the world. Despite their shared approach to the viola da gamba, the members of Lyrata bring diverse musical backgrounds to the ensemble, enriching their performances with a dynamic interplay of styles while maintaining a cohesive artistic vision.
